At the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences of Friedrich Schiller University Jena, a

 

Professorship (W2) for Data-Driven Glas Science (m/f/d)

is to be filled for the first time in a joint appointment procedure with the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), according to the Thuringian model. Connected to the professorship is the direction of the division "Glas" in the department 5 "Materials Engineering" of BAM.

We are looking for an internationally recognized researcher with profound knowledge and experience in the field of glass materials and their data-driven or computer-aided characterization. The focus will be on data-driven glass science, which aims at realizing materials innovation by combining robot-operated processes of high-throughput synthesis with computer-aided analysis and simulation methods. An excellent spectrum of basic knowledge of the technology of vitreous materials and their structure-property relationships is expected. Successful candidates will use this knowledge to develop novel structure-process-property correlations from fundamental parameters, process parameters, and structural properties. With this knowledge, functional and structured glasses can be optimized, or new types of glasses can be developed. In addition to high-throughput synthesis, the use of comprehensive data analysis and modeling tools will also be pursued. For this purpose, methods such as machine learning, processes for the accelerated simulation of relevant atomistic models or multi-physical techniques for the description of process environments and macroscopic material behavior can be used, in order to develop new patterns or principles for the development and optimization of glass materials. Oxide glasses should be primarily dealt with, but metallic and other inorganic glasses are also of interest.

The BAM is a scientific and technical higher federal authority based in Berlin. As a departmental research facility of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, it researches, tests and advises on the protection of people, the environment and property. Activities in materials science, materials technology and chemistry focus on the technical safety of products and processes (see www.bam.de).

The professorship is connected to the Otto Schott Institute for Materials Research (OSIM) at the University of Jena. It is integrated into a highly attractive research environment with a network of natural and life science research groups, which is based on close cooperation between university and non-university research institutes and numerous optics companies, photonics, and life sciences.

Mandatory for employment are a successfully completed academic university degree preferably in the field of materials science, physics or chemistry, a qualified doctorate, pedagogical qualifications as well as a habilitation degree or comparable scientific achievements that may also have been accomplished in an industry setting.

Very good, relevant publications or patents are expected. In addition, management experience is expected, especially in administering staff and technology of scientific-technical work areas, experience in guiding young academics as well as experience in the successful acquisition of third-party funding. Willingness for active participation and for membership in the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry (CEEC Jena), contribution to current and future coordinated joint projects of the University of Jena as well as the willingness to expand existing and initiate new collaborations is required.

The appointment at BAM will be as a civil servant (pay grade B 1 BBesO, director and professor) or as a permanent employee (non-tariff compensation). If the necessary requirements are met, the successful candidate will receive remuneration according to BesGr. B 1 BBesO. A promotion to BesGr. B 2 BBesO may be possible later if suitable positions are available and given ability, qualification, and professional performance. For candidates who do not meet the legal career requirements for federal civil servants at the time of hiring, a non-tariff employment is offered. The trial period regulations according to § 34 BLV and § 31 TVöD are to be observed. Main work location is at BAM Berlin. Appointment at Friedrich-Schiller-University will be at full membership level according to §85 Abs. 7 Thür HG. Teaching obligation is 2h.
